AGF backs career path for tax professionals
Barbara Bako, Abuja.
The Accountant General of the Federation (AGF), Dr. Shamsuddeen Ogunjimi, has expressed commitment to securing formal recognition for tax professionals in Nigeria’s federal civil service, as part of ongoing reforms in the Scheme of Service.
Dr. Ogunjimi gave the assurance in Abuja while receiving a delegation from the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN), led by its President, Mr. Innocent Ohagwa, during a courtesy visit to his office.
According to him, the demand by the institute for the creation of a distinct career path for tax professionals—beginning at Grade Level 10—will be tabled before the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation for consideration.
He argued that tax professionals deserve recognition within the civil service structure similar to lawyers, doctors, and other specialized fields.
On Nigeria’s fiscal outlook, the AGF noted that the country stands “on the threshold of far-reaching reforms” under the recently enacted Tax Reform Acts.
If properly implemented, he said, the reforms would reshape the fiscal landscape, improve revenue mobilization, and plug existing leakages.
He further revealed plans to reposition the Treasury Academy in Orozo into a world-class institute that will train accountants and financial managers to international standards.
This, he explained, would not only enhance professionalism in public financial management but also contribute to more efficient revenue generation for the Nigerian economy.
Earlier, CITN President Ohagwa congratulated Dr. Ogunjimi on his appointment, describing it as a recognition of merit, competence, and years of dedicated service.

He urged the AGF to push forward the institute’s request for structured career progression for tax practitioners, stressing that taxation plays a critical role in Nigeria’s economic and fiscal development.
Ohagwa also called for stronger collaboration between the CITN and the Office of the Accountant General in staff training and capacity development.
Such partnerships, he noted, would broaden the knowledge base of accountants, align public finance practice with global best standards, and support the success of ongoing tax reforms.
The meeting underscores growing efforts to professionalize tax administration in the public service and strengthen Nigeria’s revenue base through reforms and capacity building.
