The Office of the Tax Ombud (OTO) has intensified efforts to address multiple taxation in Nigeria, saying it is working with relevant authorities to improve tax administration and strengthen taxpayer protection.
Speaking at a breakfast meeting with financial correspondents in Abuja on Tuesday, the Tax Ombud and Chief Executive Officer of the office, Dr. John Nwabueze, said the ongoing tax reform process includes measures to harmonise revenue collection across the federal, state and local government levels.
According to him, the Joint Revenue Board is leading efforts to streamline tax administration and reduce instances of multiple taxation, although achieving the objective will require sustained collaboration among numerous revenue-generating agencies.
Nwabueze said the Office of the Tax Ombud would continue engaging stakeholders to curb excessive tax practices and ensure taxpayers are treated fairly within the system.
He also disclosed plans to collaborate with the Consumer Complaint Commission, noting that many consumer related issues have implications for tax administration and dispute resolution.
The Tax Ombud described the media as an important stakeholder in promoting public understanding of tax policies and reforms, urging financial journalists to support campaigns aimed at improving taxpayer awareness and confidence.
He said the establishment of the Office of the Tax Ombud represents a significant step toward enhancing transparency, accountability and trust in Nigeria’s tax system by providing an independent platform for resolving complaints and protecting taxpayers’ rights.
Nwabueze noted that effective tax systems around the world are built on fairness, accessibility, efficient dispute resolution and public trust, adding that the office was created to provide timely and cost-effective mechanisms for addressing tax-related grievances.

He explained that the office serves as a bridge between taxpayers and revenue authorities through mediation, conciliation and other alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, helping to reduce prolonged litigation and improve efficiency within the tax administration framework.
As part of efforts to improve access to its services, Nwabueze said the office recently launched a website, call centre and case management portal, enabling taxpayers to obtain information, submit complaints and track the progress of their cases in real time.
He stressed the importance of public feedback in strengthening the institution and improving service delivery, adding that constructive criticism would help the office achieve its mandate and establish standards for future leadership.
The Tax Ombud reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to fairness, transparency and taxpayer engagement, expressing confidence that stronger collaboration with the media would boost public trust and support ongoing tax reforms.
He also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for championing reforms aimed at creating a fairer, more inclusive and sustainable tax system, while praising the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, for his leadership during the reform process.
