President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday inaugurated 10 housing units for justices of the Court of Appeal in Abuja, describing judicial welfare as a critical investment in strengthening the rule of law and democratic governance.

Represented by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, Tinubu said the newly completed judges’ quarters in Katampe underscore his administration’s commitment to enhancing the welfare, independence, and efficiency of the judiciary.

According to the President, a well-supported judiciary is essential for good governance, economic growth, investment confidence, and social stability.

“When judges are provided with secure accommodation, conducive working environments, and the institutional support necessary to carry out their functions, the entire justice system benefits,” he said.

Tinubu noted that the project forms part of broader efforts to strengthen judicial institutions and improve the working conditions of judicial officers across the country.

He also urged state governments to prioritise investments in judicial infrastructure, stressing that support for the judiciary should be viewed as an investment in democracy, peace, and national development.

The President commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for executing the project, describing him as diligent and committed to delivering key government initiatives.

Speaking at the event, Wike dismissed suggestions that the housing project was intended to influence the judiciary, insisting that it was aimed solely at enhancing judicial independence and welfare.

President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, welcomed the initiative, saying secure housing would provide judicial officers with a conducive environment to discharge their duties without fear or external pressure.

Tinubu also performed the groundbreaking ceremony for additional judges’ quarters to be constructed for the National Industrial Court and the Code of Conduct Bureau in the Katampe District.

According to the Federal Capital Development Authority, the estate is part of a larger project involving the construction of 40 judges’ quarters, complete with supporting infrastructure and recreational facilities.
