Kano Governor dumps NNPP amid internal crisis

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has officially resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing persistent internal disputes and the need to prioritize the welfare of Kano residents.

The announcement was made through a statement released on Friday by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

Governor Yusuf communicated his decision in a letter addressed to the Chairman of Diso-Chiranchi Ward, NNPP, in Gwale Local Government Area, formally withdrawing from the party effective 23 January 2026.

In the letter, Yusuf expressed gratitude for the party’s support and the opportunities he received during his political journey with the NNPP.

“I am sincerely grateful to the leadership and members of the NNPP across Kano State for giving me the platform to serve since 2022, and for the support, goodwill, and cooperation extended to me during my tenure,” the Governor said.

The resignation comes against the backdrop of ongoing leadership disputes and legal battles that have unsettled the NNPP at both state and national levels.

“Recent internal disagreements and court proceedings have created divisions that appear increasingly irreconcilable, weakening party cohesion and generating uncertainty for members and supporters,” Yusuf noted.

He said his decision followed careful reflection and was motivated purely by public interest.

“After careful consideration, I believe resigning is in the best interest of the people of Kano State. This decision is made in good faith, without ill will, and with a continued commitment to the peace, unity, and progress of the state,” he added.

Governor Yusuf is not alone in his exit; his resignation coincides with 21 Kano State Assembly members, eight members of the House of Representatives, and 44 Local Government Chairmen leaving the party.

Hon. Kabiru Zubairu, Secretary of Diso-Chiranchi Ward, acknowledged the resignation and praised Yusuf’s contributions to infrastructure, urban renewal, health, education, and economic empowerment in the state.

“We recognize the Governor’s impressive achievements and acknowledge the ongoing challenges within our party. While efforts continue to resolve these issues, we accept his resignation with respect,” Zubairu said.
