The Department of State Services (DSS) has successfully rescued 25 travellers who were abducted by suspected kidnappers in Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State, the state government has announced.
The victims, who were seized on December 21, 2025, while travelling to attend Eid-el-Maulud celebrations, were freed following security operations, Plateau State Secretary to the Government, Samuel Jatau, confirmed during a press briefing at the Government House in Jos on Saturday.
According to Jatau, the victims were travelling in a vehicle when they were intercepted by kidnappers who disguised themselves as vigilantes. While 28 people were initially in the vehicle, three managed to escape during the attack.
“The Plateau State Government is pleased to announce that 25 kidnapped children have been successfully rescued through the coordinated efforts of security agencies,” Jatau said.

He explained that the rescued individuals comprise 19 males and six females, adding that they have undergone medical examinations and were found to be in stable condition, aside from minor injuries.
Jatau commended the DSS for its role in the operation, describing the agency’s intervention as decisive. He noted that the successful rescue followed sustained pressure and collaboration between the state government and security operatives.
The rescued victims have since been handed over to officials of the Wase Local Government Area for further care. Jatau advised the council to provide temporary psychological support before reunification with their families.
“They need to be monitored for a few weeks to ensure full recovery. The government will continue to support them,” he said.
The state government also reiterated its appreciation to all security agencies operating in Plateau, calling for continued cooperation to address security challenges across the state.
