Family to sue AKTH over daughter’s death due to alleged negligence

The Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) faces accusations of gross negligence following the death of a young mother, Amina Muhammad, at the facility on Sunday.

The expectant mother died due to complications from a Caesarean Section (CS), which her family claims resulted from negligence, unprofessionalism, and inadequate equipment in the hospital.

According to an elder sister of the deceased (name withheld), Amina’s CS was unnecessarily delayed over the provision of blood pints in case a transfusion was needed. However, her condition deteriorated immediately after the surgery, ultimately leading to her death.

“She checked into the hospital by herself last Friday but was unnecessarily delayed over the issue of blood. A hospital like AKTH should have a standard blood bank,” the sister said.

“After all the delays, she was finally operated on without any transfusion. But her condition worsened—she had difficulty breathing and was placed on oxygen using a manual machine. Later, she was connected to an oxygen concentrator, but there was no electricity to power the device.”

“Imagine a hospital like AKTH without a stable alternative power supply. We endured unbearable heat due to the harsh weather—just think of what the patients are going through.”

“The staff were inconsistent, unprofessional, and showed no empathy whatsoever. We pleaded for her transfer to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for better treatment, but they refused. Instead, she was moved back into the labor room.”

“We are devastated and have already informed human rights lawyers about this,” the sister added.

When contacted, the hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Hajia Hauwa Inuwa Dutse, stated that she had forwarded the deceased’s file to the management for review.

“I have personally submitted the late woman’s medical records to the management,” she said.

“They will review everything, determine who is at fault or what went wrong, and the public will be duly informed of our findings.”
