President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd), on his 84th birthday.
In a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu rejoiced with the family, friends, and associates of the former leader, describing him as a key figure whose eight years in office left a significant imprint on Nigeria’s socio-economic and political landscape.
The President lauded Babangida’s distinguished military career, which included roles as an instructor at the Nigerian Defence Academy, Commander of the 4 Reconnaissance Regiment, Commander of the Nigerian Army Armoured Corps, Director of Army Staff Duties and Plans, and Chief of Army Staff.

He also noted Babangida’s administration’s contributions to national development, citing landmark projects such as the Third Mainland Bridge, as well as reforms that liberalised the Nigerian economy.
President Tinubu recalled that Babangida established key security and regulatory institutions, including the State Security Service (SSS), National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC). He also credited him with creating new states and relocating the Federal Capital from Lagos to Abuja.
While thanking him for his service and sacrifice, President Tinubu prayed to Almighty Allah to grant the retired general many more years in good health and renewed strength.
