The Association of Kano Online Journalists (ASKOJ), in collaboration with the Human Rights Journalists Network Nigeria, Advocats Sans Frontières France (ASF France), and E-RIGHT, is set to host a capacity-building webinar aimed at empowering media professionals and digital rights advocates with critical knowledge on data protection, privacy, and responsible digital journalism.….
The webinar is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, August 5, 2019, and is open to journalists, editors, media students, digital rights advocates, legal professionals, and civil society advocates across Nigeria and beyond.
In a pre-event interview, Comrade Salisu Yakubu, Chairman of ASKOJ, emphasized the importance of the training in the face of mounting challenges confronting journalists in the digital era.
“This training is meant to equip journalists and other relevant stakeholders with the necessary capacity to understand the dilemmas of digital journalism, data protection laws, and newsroom responsibilities,” he stated.
He further noted that the evolving media landscape requires practitioners to be more aware of the ethical and legal implications of their work.
“It is essential for journalists to be aware of best practices for consent, transparency, and privacy in the digital space,” Yakubu added..
The ASKOJ chairman also raised concerns about the state of press freedom and digital surveillance in the country.
“Real-world surveillance and digital repression in Nigeria have become rife. It is critical that journalists are equipped with the capacity to navigate and challenge these threats effectively,” the ASKOJ Boss cautioned.
