The Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) has pledged support for the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Initiative in a bid to accelerate Nigeria’s transition to cleaner energy, reduce poverty, and enhance cost efficiency in public service delivery.
Speaking in Abuja while receiving the Program Director/CEO of the Presidential CNG Initiative, Engr. Michael Oluwagbemi, and his team, the Director-General of the BPP, Dr. Adebowale A. Adedokun, described the partnership as a step in the right direction.
He stressed that effective public procurement plays a pivotal role in delivering value across all sectors, including health, transportation, energy, and infrastructure. According to him, failure in procurement systems could worsen poverty and hinder national development.
Dr. Adedokun highlighted the economic benefits of adopting CNG, noting that it would significantly cut transportation costs for civil and public servants. He proposed offering incentives to encourage vehicle conversions to CNG, thereby helping Nigerians stretch their income and boost productivity.
He also emphasized the need for professional training tailored to public procurement standards, ensuring compliance, accountability, and timely delivery in the sector.

Additionally, he called for a tripartite meeting involving the BPP, the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), and the Presidential CNG Initiative to align procurement policies and streamline implementation.
In his remarks, Engr. Oluwagbemi commended the BPP’s leadership and openness, saying that strong procurement frameworks are essential to the success of the CNG rollout.
He urged the Bureau to set the pace by converting its own fleet to CNG and encouraging its staff to adopt the fuel alternative.
The Presidential CNG Initiative, a key component of President Bola Tinubu’s clean energy agenda, seeks to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and promote local solutions to national challenges.
