The Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, on Monday, signed two bills into law, at the 28th Executive Council Meeting.
The laws including the Water Users Association Established Law, 2025 which empowers the government to operate, maintain and construct irrigation project, according to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mustapha Muhammad.
The statement read further:
“With the passage of this Bill into Law, the Kano State government can construct a gigantic irrigation project at Jakara Dam with the capacity to provide 1,500 hectares for irrigation farming.
The second law signed by the peoples governor is the Amendment of WRECA Law that allows the state government to appoint Deputy Managing Director.
According to the Commissioner of Water Resources, Hon Haruna Doguwa, the Water Users Association Law will give the government access funds for the construction of the Irrigation Project at Jakara Dam to the tune of sixteen billion naira (N16 b).
He stated that the project is going to benefit thousands of farmers around Minjibir, Gabasawa, Gezawa among others.
“The government will open an account and deposit five billion naira (N 5 b) to pay farmers for off season farming, Honourable Doguwa has said.
No doubt, this giant irrigation project will create more wealth, job opportunities and will add more tons of farm produce in the state.”
