The Association of Zakat and Waqf Operators in Nigeria (AZAWON) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to explore the zakat scheme as a means of alleviating poverty in the country.
The association made the appeal in a statement issued on Monday and shared with Daily Commerce. The statement was signed by its National Chairman, Malam Muhammad Lawal Maidoki.
AZAWON welcomed President Tinubu’s public acknowledgment that hunger and poverty remain the biggest threats to peace in Nigeria.
“We believe this acknowledgment presents an opportunity for the Federal Government to explore innovative solutions to these challenges. Islamic principles such as Zakat, Waqf, and Sadaqah have proven effective in alleviating poverty and hunger in Muslim communities,” Maidoki said.
He added, “AZAWON, with its extensive experience in managing these schemes, is well-positioned to partner with the Federal Government to make a meaningful impact.”
Maidoki noted that AZAWON has played a key role in fighting hunger and poverty in Nigeria, including supporting victims of natural disasters and displacement.
“Our organization comprises seasoned professionals in philanthropy management, ensuring the efficient collection, distribution, and administration of Zakat, Waqf, and Sadaqah,” he stated.
While calling for a partnership with the Federal Government to tackle extreme poverty, AZAWON urged President Tinubu to recognize and collaborate with the association in its efforts.
“We believe our collaboration would yield positive outcomes, given our expertise and commitment to serving the vulnerable,” Maidoki said.
He also appealed to Muslim leaders, including President Tinubu, Vice-President Kashim Shettima, and other top government officials, to pay their Zakat through AZAWON.
“This will ensure their contributions reach the intended beneficiaries, as stipulated in the Quran,” he emphasized.
