FG moves to resolve contractor payment dispute

Barbara Bako, Abuja

The Federal Government has stepped up efforts to resolve longstanding payment disputes with local contractors, as part of a broader push to sustain economic reforms and restore confidence in public finances.

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, gave the assurance during a high level meeting with representatives of the All-Indigenous Contractors Association of Nigeria in Abuja on Monday.

The meeting focused on outstanding capital expenditure obligations, with discussions centred on improving transparency, accountability, and establishing a credible framework for settling verified claims.

“Resolving these obligations is important not just for contractors, but for confidence in government, job creation, business continuity, and overall economic stability,” the minister said.

Oyedele acknowledged concerns raised by contractors over delayed payments, contract variations, and the impact of ongoing fiscal reforms on project execution.

He noted that the government is working with relevant institutions to reconcile outstanding claims and develop a structured and sustainable payment plan.

He added that while the administration remains committed to implementing key reforms to stabilise the economy, stakeholder concerns would be considered to minimise disruptions.

“The government recognizes the critical role local contractors play in infrastructure development and economic growth. We are determined to resolve all outstanding issues through structured engagement within the framework of fiscal responsibility,” he said.

Senior government officials at the meeting included Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Finance, Raymond Omachi; Permanent Secretary, Special Duties, Mohammed Sanusi Danjuma; and Accountant-General of the Federation, Shamseldeen Ogunjimi, among others.

Representatives of the contractors commended the minister for initiating dialogue and expressed optimism that the renewed engagement would lead to practical solutions, pledging continued cooperation to support the timely delivery of infrastructure projects nationwide.
