The Lagos State Government has pledged strong collaboration with the Office of the Tax Ombud to deepen tax compliance and enhance Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) in the state.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said this would be achieved through sustained public awareness campaigns and improved citizens’ confidence in the tax system, anchored on fair, impartial, and satisfactory resolution of tax disputes.
According to a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Tax Ombud, Chukwudi Achife, the Governor made the commitment when the Tax Ombud/CEO of the Tax Ombud, Dr. John C. Nwabueze, paid him a courtesy visit in Lagos on Tuesday, February 17, 2026.

Speaking during the visit, Dr. Nwabueze told the Governor that the Office of the Tax Ombud plays a critical role in protecting taxpayers against multiple taxation and other abuses by tax and revenue authorities, adding that such safeguards are essential for building trust and confidence in the tax system.
According to him, improved taxpayer confidence would lead to higher voluntary compliance and enable governments at all levels to meet their revenue targets more sustainably.
Dr. Nwabueze further noted that, “collaboration between the Lagos State Government and the Office of the Tax Ombud would enhance public understanding of the new tax reforms and stimulate broader economic growth.”
In his response, Governor Sanwo-Olu commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for establishing the Office of the Tax Ombud, describing it as a cornerstone of the ongoing tax reforms.
The Governor, who pledged the cooperation of the Lagos State Government to ensure the success of the Tax Ombud’s mandate, said that strengthening public confidence in taxation remains a central pillar of his administration’s governance agenda.
Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed optimism that the Tax Ombud would play a significant role in fostering a more accountable and people-centred tax structure, stating, “If you succeed in Lagos, then the tax reforms will be successful all over Nigeria.”
