ECOWAS at 50: Leaders recommit to regional trade, security

ECOWAS leaders have renewed their commitment to regional security, democracy, and development at the official launch of the bloc’s 50th anniversary in Accra, Ghana. The event kicks off a series of celebrations across member states under the theme “ECOWAS of the People.”

ECOWAS Commission President, Dr. Omar Touray, said the anniversary is a time to celebrate achievements and strengthen regional unity. He highlighted ECOWAS’s role in promoting integration, trade and political stability.

Representing Nigeria’s President Tinubu, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu emphasised Nigeria’s dedication to democracy, rule of law and regional cooperation as key to peace and development.

Ghana’s President John Mahama praised ECOWAS’s success through African-led diplomacy and announced scholarships for students across the region. The event also unveiled the official ECOWAS Golden Jubilee logo and theme.
