Tinubu appoints Akinfeleye, others to varsity councils

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed renowned communications scholar Prof. Ralph Akinfeleye to the Governing Council of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State.

Akinfeleye, a former Head of the Department of Mass Communication at the University of Lagos and Chairman of the Centre of Excellence in Multimedia and Cinematography/Unilag Radio 103.1 FM and Television, replaces Wahab Owokoniran, who now serves as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Federal University of Transport, Daura, Katsina State.

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, announced the appointment in a statement on Monday, adding that Akinfeleye had previously served on the Governing Council of Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja.

In the same announcement, the President approved a new management team for the Federal University of Health Sciences and Technology, Tsafe, Zamfara State, appointing retired Colonel and surgeon, Ibrahim Yakasai, as Vice Chancellor.

Other appointees include Hamisu Yelwa as Registrar, Usman Sanusi as Bursar, and Shehu Liman as Librarian.

Yakasai, who served as the late General Sani Abacha’s personal physician, is currently the Provost of the College of Health Sciences at Bayero University, Kano, and chairman of the Committee of Provosts of Colleges of Medicine in Nigeria.

His career spans several leadership roles, including Director-General of the Kano State Hospitals Management Board, and he has also earned numerous fellowships from prestigious medical institutions in the UK and USA.

Bayo, said the President also named Mrs Chisom Obih to the governing council of Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, to fill a vacancy following the death of a council member.
