The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has expelled former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, from the party.

The party also barred him from taking part in any of its activities over alleged impersonation and forgery, slamming him with a 30-year ban from all party activities.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Monday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Araba Aiyenigba, the SDP said El-Rufai’s membership claim was fraudulent and that he had never been officially registered with the party.

Aiyenigba said the decision followed investigations that showed the former governor impersonated a party member, forged documents, and attempted to destabilize the SDP through what he described as unconstitutional actions and deceptive political moves.

“El-Rufai never registered at his ward as required by the party’s constitution, yet he publicly declared on social media that he had joined the party. He also took photographs with suspended party leaders to create the impression that he was a member,” Aiyenigba said.

He added that the party also confirmed El-Rufai’s ties with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and accused him of trying to drag the SDP into an unapproved political alliance.

“Having established that he openly declared for the ADC and continued to act against the principles of the SDP, the party had no option but to disassociate itself from him,” Aiyenigba said.

The SDP said El-Rufai has been barred from identifying with its name, logo, or activities for 30 years, adding that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other authorities had been notified of his status.

Aiyenigba explained that El-Rufai also forged a membership register in Kaduna, falsely listing himself as ‘number 001’ in the Unguwar Sarki Ward of Kaduna North Local Government Area.

The former governor recently announced his resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing differences between his personal values and the party’s direction.
