Prof. Haruna Musa emerges as BUK’s 12th VC

The Governing Council of Bayero University, Kano has appointed Professor Haruna Musa as the institution’s 12th Vice-Chancellor. The announcement was made during a council meeting on Thursday, 3rd July 2025. Professor Musa received his letter of appointment and will assume office on August 18, 2025, succeeding Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, whose tenure ends later in August after a five-year leadership.

The letter of appointment was presented by the Chairman of the Governing Council, Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, in the presence of Council members, the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abbas, and the University Registrar, Haruna Aliyu. Dr. Gawuna congratulated Prof. Musa on his well-deserved appointment and extended his best wishes for a successful tenure.

Quoting from the appointment letter, Dr. Gawuna said:

“The Governing Council of Bayero University, Kano, in the exercise of the powers conferred on it by Section 4 of the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Amendment Act, 2003, at its meeting held on Thursday, 3rd July 2025, considered the recommendation of the Selection Board and hereby approves your appointment as the substantive Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano, for a single term of five years with effect from August 18, 2025.”

The announcement was met with widespread congratulations from across the University community. Principal Officers, staff, and members of the Senate and Congregation commended Prof. Musa’s appointment and expressed optimism about his leadership.

Prof. Haruna Musa, a Professor of Polymer Chemistry and the current Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), recently emerged as the top candidate during the University’s 7th Congregation Parley, where he earned overwhelming community support.

As he prepares to take over the reins of leadership, expectations are high that Prof. Musa will build upon the achievements of his predecessor and steer the University toward greater academic excellence, research innovation, and global recognition.
