SON, manufacturers unit to boost quality roofing sheets
The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has taken a decisive step toward strengthening the roofing materials sector by convening a high-level stakeholders’ meeting under the theme, “Promoting Standard Roofing Sheets for a Safer Built Environment.”
The event, held at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), brought together manufacturers, regulators, and industry experts to reinforce compliance with quality roofing standards and stimulate economic growth.
Representing the Director-General, Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwunonso Okeke, Mrs. Talatu Ethan, Director of Corporate Affairs at SON, reiterated the agency’s commitment to enforcing standards that safeguard consumers, improve building safety, and support Nigeria’s economic development.

These standards aim to curb the proliferation of substandard roofing sheets in the market, ensuring durability and safety in construction projects.
The forum emphasized SON’s regulatory and technical support for stakeholders, stressing the need for strict compliance with roofing material standards. A key takeaway was the push for the NigeriaFirst Policy, which encourages government agencies (MDAs) to prioritize locally manufactured, SON-certified roofing materials to boost domestic production and reduce reliance on imports.
Leading manufacturers, including Bright Star Aluminium, Koralom Aluminium, Chi Global, ASAP Steel & Pipe, and God First Steel Works, pledged their commitment to adhering to these standards, reinforcing their role in advancing Nigeria’s industrial sector.
The initiative is expected to enhance the competitiveness of Nigerian-made roofing materials, create jobs, and reduce building failures caused by substandard products.
By fostering collaboration between SON and industry players, the move aligns with broader efforts to strengthen local manufacturing and improve Nigeria’s built environment.
As SON intensifies enforcement, stakeholders anticipate a more structured and quality-driven roofing market, positioning Nigeria for sustainable economic growth in the construction sector.
