President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the reappointment of Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd) as Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), extending his tenure for another five years until 2031.
The announcement was conveyed in a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga on Friday.
Marwa, first appointed in January 2021 by former President Muhammadu Buhari, previously served as Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Drug Abuse. A seasoned military officer from Adamawa State, Marwa is a former military governor of Lagos and Borno States and an alumnus of the Nigerian Military School and the Nigerian Defence Academy.
Commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1973, he held several key military and diplomatic roles, including brigade major of the 23 Armoured Brigade, Aide-de-Camp to the Chief of Army Staff, and Deputy Defence Adviser at the Nigerian Embassy in Washington, DC. He later became Defence Adviser to Nigeria’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations.

Marwa holds postgraduate degrees in Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh and a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University.
His leadership of the NDLEA has been marked by major achievements, including the arrest of over 73,000 drug traffickers and the seizure of more than 15 million kilogrammes of illicit substances.
The agency has also expanded nationwide campaigns against drug abuse during his tenure.
President Tinubu, in reaffirming his confidence in Marwa, urged him to intensify efforts against drug trafficking and abuse, especially to protect young Nigerians.
