Meet Nigeria’s First Tax Ombudsman, Honorable Dr. John Nwabueze

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s appointment of Dr. John Nwabueze as the Honourable Tax Ombudsman is a thoughtful and civil choice. The President understands the anxiety taxpayers can feel, and the critical need for a knowledgeable and compassionate intermediary.
According to a statement from Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Dr. Nwabueze’s appointment aligns with President Tinubu’s commitment to implementing far-reaching, sustainable reforms in Nigeria’s tax and revenue administration.

Dr. Nwabueze embodies the core mission of the Office of the Tax Ombud. His life’s work has been dedicated to building a fair, impartial, and effective tax system. Hailing from Asaba, Oshimili South Local Government Area of Delta State, his education started from Dennis Memorial Grammer School, Onitsha, onto the halls of the University of Jos. to the upper echelons of U.S.
His academic credentials, including a Doctorate in Business Administration and advanced degrees in Accounting, are matched by his deep practical experience. For over two decades, as the Managing Partner of a leading U.S. Tax firm, he didn’t just study tax law; he lived it.
As a certified IRS Enrolled Agent and Tax Advocate, he has personally represented thousands of individuals and businesses, navigating the complexities of the U.S. tax system to resolve billions of dollars in disputes. Dr. Nwabueze has already invested this expertise back into Nigeria. His commitment is demonstrated by his pivotal role as a Technical Consultant to the Nigerian Senate, where his work was instrumental in creating the Federal Capital Territory Board of Internal Revenue—a testament to his ability to translate international best practices into effective Nigerian institutions.
His years of service as Special Assistant on the Economy to President Obasanjo’s Chief Economic Adviser further honed his understanding of the macroeconomic landscape and the delicate balance between revenue generation and growth. This proven track record in IRS tax debt resolution, government accounting, and auditing makes him the right person to establish the Office of the Tax Ombud as a cornerstone of equity, justice, and public confidence.
Beyond the impressive CV, he is a man of diverse interests, a golfer, music enthusiast, and traveler. This well-rounded perspective speaks to an individual who understands the human experience behind every tax file.
