Nigeria’s inflation rate slowed further in August 2025, dipping to 20.12 percent from 21.88 percent in July, according to new figures released Monday by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
The agency said the 1.76 percentage point decline marks the fifth straight month of moderation in headline inflation.
The report stated that, on a year-on-year basis, the headline inflation rate was 12.03per cent lower than the rate recorded in August 2024 (32.15per cent).
“This shows that the Headline inflation rate (year-on-year basis) decreased in August 2025 compared to the same month in the preceding year (i.e., August 2024), though with a different base year, November 2009 = 100,” the report disclosed.
The report revealed that, “On a month-on-month basis, the Headline inflation rate in August 2025 was 0.74per cent, which was 1.25per cent lower than the rate recorded in July 2025 (1.99per cent). This means that in August 2025, the rate of increase in the average price level was lower than the rate of increase in the average price level in July 2025.
“The percentage change in the average CPI for the 12 months ending August 2025 over the average for the previous 12months period was 24.66per cent, showing a 6.6per cent decrease compared to 31.26per cent recorded in August 2024,” the reported stated.

On urban inflation, the report by NBS stated that, “On a year-on-year basis, in August 2025, the Urban inflation rate was 19.75per cent, which was 14.83percentage points lower compared to the 34.58per cent recorded in August 2024.
“On a month-on-month basis, the Urban inflation rate was 0.4per cent in August 2025, down by 1.37per cent compared to July 2025 (1.86per cent). The corre sponding twelve-month average for the Urban inflation rate was 25.81per cent in August 2025. This was 7.63% points lower compared to the 33.44per ceent reported in August 2024.
According to NBS, the report on rural inflation sttated that in August 2025, it was 20.28per cent on a year-on-year basis. This was 9.67percentage points lower compared to the 29.95per cent recorded in August 2024.
“On a month-on-month basis, the Rural inflation rate in August 2025 was 1.38per cent, down by 0.92per cent compared to July 2025 (2.30per cent).
“The correspond ing twelve-month average for the Rural inflation rate in August 2025 was 23.07per cent. This was 6.25perentage points lower compared to the 29.32% recorded in August 2024.
