Director General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Dr. Emomotimi Agama, has urged graduating cadets of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) to embrace capital market investments as a pathway to wealth creation and long-term financial security.
Speaking at the Academy’s 23rd Convocation Lecture in honour of cadets of the 72 Regular Course and postgraduate students on Wednesday, Agama said the market offers diverse opportunities beyond salaries and pensions.
He said, “Public servants, traditionally reliant on fixed salaries and pensions, can achieve economic prosperity by strategically engaging with the capital market. Capital markets, comprising stock exchanges, bond markets, and alternative investments, offer opportunities for wealth creation, passive income, and financial security. However, participation requires financial literacy.”

Agama noted that securities enable investors to take on risk for higher returns while allowing issuers to raise needed funds.
He stressed that cadets should only transact with SEC-registered entities to safeguard their investments.
On his part, NDA Commandant, Major General A.K. Ibrahim, said poor resource management during service often leaves officers financially stranded in retirement.
He said, “The reason we are having this lecture today is because of the value we place on investment and empowerment issues for the military. One of the reasons we have issues after retirement is due to lack of investments and management of the little resources we have.”
The Commandant expressed hope that the lecture would help officers make better financial choices and secure the future of their families.
