President Bola Tinubu has appointed 39-year-old Abdullahi Garba Ramat, a former local government chairman in Kano State, as the acting chairman and chief executive officer of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

The appointment, announced Thursday by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, marks a rapid political ascent for Ramat, who served as chairman of Ungogo LGA between 2021 and 2024. A trained electrical engineer with a PhD in Strategic Management, Ramat is set to occupy one of the most influential regulatory positions in Nigeria’s power sector pending Senate confirmation.

To forestall a leadership vacuum at NERC, Tinubu directed that Ramat assume office in an acting capacity until he is screened by the National Assembly.

The president also nominated two other professionals to strengthen NERC’s leadership: Abubakar Yusuf as Commissioner for Consumer Affairs and Fouad Olayinka Animashun as Commissioner for Finance and Management Services.

The appointments, according to Onanuga, reflect Tinubu’s push to inject fresh energy and competence into Nigeria’s struggling electricity sector.

Reacting to the development, Ramat expressed gratitude to the president, calling the opportunity “a divine elevation.”

“Alhamdulillah. From leading just a single LGA to now being entrusted with matters concerning all 774 LGAs through NERC. Truly, God is great,” he said in a brief statement.
