FAAN defends airport security measures amid K1 controversy

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has confirmed an incident involving popular Fuji musician, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, also known as K1 De Ultimate, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, FAAN said the incident occurred on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at the airport’s domestic terminal during boarding for a ValueJet flight to Lagos.

According to the airport authority, K1 allegedly attempted to board the ValueJet flight (VK 201) with an unidentified liquid substance, which violates the aviation security regulations.

Despite repeated warnings from Aviation Security (AVSEC) personnel and the flight captain, the musician allegedly declined to comply with directives.

FAAN explained that, under international aviation standards including Nigeria’s National Civil Aviation Security Programme (NCASP) and ICAO Annex 17, passengers are prohibited from carrying liquids exceeding 100ml unless declared and medically justified.

Tensions escalated when a security officer requested the passenger to step aside for clarification. The statement alleged that K1 refused and poured the contents of the flask, later identified as alcohol, on the officer. The flight captain also intervened but was met with the same resistance.

Following the completion of boarding, the flight crew closed the aircraft door, prompting the musician to move to the front of the aircraft, refusing to leave. AVSEC’s crime unit eventually escorted him away for investigation and was later released.

Mrs. Obiageli Orah, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, the authority reaffirmed the agency’s resolve to maintain professionality and secure operations at all Nigerian airports.

FAAN emphasized its commitment to upholding aviation safety and warned that any actions undermining airport security regardless of who is involved will not be tolerated.

The authority said investigations are ongoing and that those found culpable will face appropriate sanctions.
