In a move to sustain momentum on critical reforms within the Nigeria Customs Service, President Bola Tinubu has extended the tenure of Comptroller-General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi by one year.
Initially due to retire on 31 August 2025, Adeniyi will now remain in office until August 2026.
The extension, announced by Presidential Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, is part of efforts to ensure continuity in ongoing transformation initiatives within the agency.
According to the statement, Adeniyi is expected to spearhead the completion of key projects including the digital-driven modernisation of Customs operations, implementation of the National Single Window platform, and alignment with Nigeria’s obligations under the AfCFTA framework.

“President Tinubu acknowledges the impactful leadership of Mr. Adeniyi and remains confident in his capacity to drive forward the Customs Service’s core responsibilities of revenue generation, trade facilitation, and border security,” the statement said.
Adeniyi, who took over from his predecessor CG Hameed Ali, in acting capacity in June 2023 and was confirmed in October same year, has led a number of strategic reforms seen as crucial to improving efficiency and boosting government revenue.
